Saving innocent people and exposing the ‘bad guys’ is what heroes do. Bradley Manning did just that when he leaked United States government cables and videos to WikiLeaks. His intent was to expose the killing of innocent civilians as part of the Iraqi war and to inform citizens so that they could take action. He is now imprisoned and facing twenty-two felony counts, all of which incriminate him as a traitor to the U.S. and that could result in him serving fifty-two years behind bars. Manning believed that the U.S. government was committing war crimes and that the world should know about the communiques including video footage that provided evidence of such actions. He does not stand alone. He has many supporters who believe that†¦show more content†¦Manning was identified as the individual who leaked the horrifying ‘Collateral Murder’ video, widely distributed and viewed on the Internet, in which several innocent Iraqis as well as two Reuters journa lists are gunned down by a U.S. Apache helicopter. The trove of information leaked also contained The Iraq War Logs and Afghan War Diary (Lucas). The Iraqi War Logs and the Afghan War Diary are a compilation of documents about the cover up of information pertaining to civilians tortured and killed by international forces (Karhula). The documents released include both classified and unclassified documents. The released information show evidence of clear war crimes and torture of which the U.S. had full knowledge (Madar 2). Manning’s actions were not rewarded as those of a patriot whistleblower but treated as those of a war time spy or criminal. The twenty-two charges, the most serious of which is ‘aiding the enemy’ who was identified by the prosecution in his case as Al Qaeda (Marshall), could result in life in prison. The Military Whistleblowers Protection Act outlines protection against reprisals as a result of disclosing evidence of improper or illegal activiti es on the part of the federal government (Whitaker 2). Consequently, persons disclosing the information should be protected.
